2009 Jr. Olympics Skills Competition

BYUH Old Gym

Saturday, April 25th
5-7 pm

Article Submitted by:
Martha Christensen
mlclaie@hotmail.com

This national initiative gives boys and girls, ages 8 to 13,
the chance to showcase their athletic talents in four sports:
basketball, soccer, tennis and track & field.  Laie Elementary has
sent 6 winners to the national finals over the last several years.
These winners included:  Josh, Rachel, and Savanna Christensen; Kamaile
Aluli, Michael Mariteragi, and Quayd Ah You.

This is a Free event.  There is NO registration fee. Parents need to register their children at the event.

Jr. Olympic Skills is intended to encourage youth participation in
sport and emphasize the “FUN” element of competition.  Since there is
no registration fee, everyone has the opportunity to participate.  Boys
and girls compete SEPARATELY and can advance through three (3) levels
of competition, including the National Finals at the United States
Olympic Training Center. Our area has sent 7 winners to the national
finals over the last several years.  This year the nationals will be
held in Chula Vista, California at the end of July.

Jr. Olympic
Skills consists of four sports.  Participants may compete in any or all
four of the athletic disciplines. Parents need to register their
children at the event.

Basketball
Challenges participants to score as many points as possible by
making baskets from designated shooting areas and the free throw line
in 45 seconds.
Soccer
Tests participants’ ability to dribble, shoot and score in the fastest time possible.
Tennis
Challenges youngsters to serve and continue to hit a
low-compression tennis ball against the wall as many times as possible
in 30 seconds.
Track & Field
Tests youngsters in two fundamental skill events: The Sprint
(50-meter dash) and The Jump (standing broad jump).  Participants
compete in both events to receive the highest cumulative point score.

Niumatalolo-coached Navy meets Obama

Advertiser Staff and News Services
Honolulu Advertiser

WASHINGTON — President Obama yesterday welcomed Navy’s football team — which is coached by former Radford High and University of Hawai’i athlete Ken Niumatalolo — to the White House and presented the Midshipmen the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, awarded yearly to the winner of the competition among the three major service academies.

It is the sixth straight year in which Navy has won the trophy.

Obama talked to Niumatalolo and another local product who plays for Navy.

“Coach Ken, thank you. We were just talking — he’s another local boy from Hawai’i. … I want to congratulate coach Ken … the first Samoan American head coach in the history of Division I-A, just the third Navy coach since World War II to have a winning record in his first season.

“Your starting quarterback is also Hawaiian. … I hear Kaipo (Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada) is a pretty easy-going guy. He doesn’t get rattled easily, performs under pressure. That’s the Hawaiian spirit. That’s how we roll.”
