WEIGHT CLASSES TO WATCH
GIRLS

108 pounds — Kahuku’s Kalae Johnson is the top seed while Hawai’i Baptist’s Kaety Enos is the second seed. Fourth-seeded Marissa Hartleb of King Kekaulike could meet ILH runner-up Macy Yonamine of Kamehameha in the quarterfinals with the winner presumably taking on Johnson for a spot in the finals. Meanwhile, Enos could meet Roosevelt’s Marisa Fukunaga in an interesting quarterfinal matchup. Konawaena’s Danielle Hubbard is the third seed.

120 pounds — This could be the most anticipated girls’ weight of the tournament. Kalani junior Megan Yamaguchi was the top seed as last year’s state runner-up and this year’s OIA champion. Fourth-seeded Jodi Ozaki of Kealakehe is also on the top bracket while Punahou freshman Mindy Chow is the second seed and Baldwin’s Kayla Giannotto is the third seed. Giannotto could meet ‘Aiea’s Joy Yamashita — the OIA runner-up — in the quarterfinal round. If Yamashita gets through, a semifinal against Chow should prove exciting.

220 pounds — While one ‘Iolani senior (103-pounder Keiko Akamine) goes for her third straight state title, another Raider senior is hoping for a back-to-back titles at 220 pounds. Top-seeded Olivia Fatongia has wrestled for the state championship in each of her three seasons, losing her first two appearances to Kamehameha graduate Hoku Nohara. Fatongia, the ILH champion, is expected to defend her title, but may be tested early. Radford sophomore Brayanne Moe — who lost to Fatongia in last year’s state final — could meet her in the quarterfinal round. Hana’s Makamae Smith is the fourth seed while Kealakehe’s Pomai Barton is the third seed and OIA champion, Sanoe Spencer of Pearl City, is second.

BOYS

114 pounds — Last year’s state champion (Kamehameha’s Shayden Terukina) moved up two weight classes to
125, opening the door for any number of challengers. Lahainaluna’s Edison Hidalgo drew the top seed. Fourth-seeded Ryan Nakagawa of Kaiser could meet ‘Iolani senior Truong Vu in the quarterfinal round with the winner expected to wrestled Hidalgo for a spot in the final. Punahou’s Jordan Ng — who defeated Vu in the ILH final — is the No. 2 seed. Kealakehe’s Donnavan Soares is the third seed, but could meet Mid-Pacific’s David Terao in a preliminary round match.

125 pounds — With three defending state champs, this should be the most anticipated weight class of the tournament. Punahou senior Reid Oshiro, who won at 125 pounds last year, is the top seed and Lahainaluna’s George Chihara is the fourth seed. The bottom side of the bracket is loaded with talent. Third-seeded Jimmy Romualdo of Konawaena may have his hands full with Kamehameha’s Terukina in a possible quarterfinal matchup. Pearl City’s Bill Takeuchi (119 champion in 2008) is seeded second and could meet Maryknoll’s Brandon Oshiro in a preliminary round.

135 pounds — Kaiser’s Byron Apo drew the top seed and is in the top bracket with fourth-seeded Tai Johnson of Konawaena. Apo moved up from 130 pounds, where he lost in last year’s state final to Lahainaluna’s Travis Okano, a three-time state champion. Kamehameha’s Jacob Luning-Hoshino is the second seed while Lahainaluna’s David Arcangel is the third seed. Mililani senior Chad Diamond, who lost to Waiakea’s Ryan Higa in last year’s state final, could meet Arcangel in the quarterfinals.

Diverse paths led them to wrestling mat

by Stanley Lee
Advertiser Staff Writer

Four years ago, Robyn Teruya gave wrestling a shot at the suggestion of her football coach at Roosevelt.

Last season, Moanalua’s Rachael Ostovich took up another sport on the mat, joining the wrestling team after cheerleading season.

The seemingly circuitous route hasn’t kept both seniors from finding success. Both won their weight classes at Saturday’s O’ahu Interscholastic Association championships and are seeded in this week’s Chevron/Hawai’i High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Championships at the Neal Blaisdell Arena.

The qualifying round starts tomorrow at 10 a.m. Semifinals and the latter consolation rounds start on Saturday at 10 a.m. Girls championship and consolation final matches begin at 3 p.m., with the boys to follow.

‘Iolani boys, Punahou girls capture crowns

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

The ‘Iolani boys swimming team was short on numbers for yesterday’s finals of the Local Motion Swimming and Diving State Championships, but certainly not on talent.

The Raiders’ “Elite Eight” brought home ‘Iolani’s first boys team title since 2005, dethroning two-time defending state champion Punahou at Central O’ahu Regional Park.

‘Iolani, led by freshman Kacy Johnson, finished with 62 points, Punahou was second with 43 and Hawai’i Prep third with 30.

The top five finishers in each individual event scored points on a 6-4-3-2-1 basis. The points for relays were 12-8-6-4-2. There were nine individual events and three relays.

Johnson won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:53.95 and the 500 freestyle in 4:38.23.

He also was part of the meet-record setting 200 medley relay team (1:35.97) and winning 400 freestyle relay team (3:15.45).

“If we didn’t have all the performances we had today, I don’t know where we’d be at,” Johnson said. “We needed to win everything to get that first.”

On the girls side, Punahou’s Christel Simms finished her high school career in style by winning all four of her events, including setting a meet record in the 100-yard backstroke for the second day in a row, as the Buffanblu cruised to the team title.

The Buffanblu girls won their fourth straight title yesterday with 75 points. ‘Iolani was second with 21 and Baldwin third with 18.

Simms, who will swim for USC next year, finished the 100 backstroke in 55.73, breaking her record of 56.34 set in trials Friday.

“That was amazing,” said Simms, who represented the Philippines at the Beijing Olympics. “I really worked hard this season for my backstroke. For all my four years I wanted to swim the 100 back and finally my senior year I got to do it.”

She also won the 100 butterfly in 56.92, and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay (1:52.55) and 400 freestyle relay (3:34.94) teams.

“Nobody deserves it more than her,” said Punahou coach Jeff Meister. “Great leader, hard worker, wonderful kid. An inspiration to everybody.”

Simms also holds four other state meet records, all set in 2007. Two are in individual events (100 freestyle, 50.15; 200 freestyle, 1:49.25) and two in relays (200 medley, 1:44.03; 200 freestyle, 1:35.43).

Buffanblu junior Rachel Fujita also won all four of her events yesterday.

She won the 50 freestyle in 24.27 and 100 freestyle in 52.65, and was a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:52.55) and 400 freestyle relay teams.

“We have a lot of seniors, we have a lot of juniors, we have good freshmen and sophomores,” Fujita said. “Our seniors are really good leaders.”

The ‘Iolani boys also got victories by senior Geramiah Simoes in the 100 butterfly (52.10) and the 200 freestyle relay team (1:28.58).

Senior Rayfe Asaoka-Gaspar was part of three winning relay teams for ‘Iolani, and Simoes, freshman Ian White and junior Kevin Jones were part of two.

Kapa’a making a run in Division II tourney

by Stanley lee
Honolulu Advertiser

WAIPAHU — Kapa’a is making the most of its second chances.

Kalia Mayer scored twice in the first half off of rebounds and Kapa’a held off a late rally to upset defending champion and fourth-seeded Kamehameha-Hawai’i, 3-2, in yesterday’s quarterfinals of the JN Automotive Group/Hawai’i High School Athletic Association Girls Division II Soccer State Championships at Waipi’o Peninsula Soccer Complex.

“We just wanted to get the ball out so we didn’t have to go to shootouts,” said Kapa’a defender Larissa Crain, who helped fend off Kamehameha-Hawai’i’s late rally. “Last year we didn’t have a good states. This year we’re trying to go far.”

Kapa’a (6-3-1), which beat Mid-Pacific in Wednesday’s first round, plays No. 1 Kailua (11-0-0) in this afternoon’s semifinals. No. 2 Kaua’i (8-0-1) plays No. 3 Pac-Five (5-6-2) in the other semifinal. Both matches start at 3 p.m.

Mayer scored in the 19th minute after a shot was poked away by the Kamehameha goalkeeper, but went directly to Mayer, who put it away.

Mililani earns OIA swimming three-peat

By Kalani Takase
Honolulu Advertiser

WAIPI’O — The Mililani boys and girls swept the O’ahu Interscholastic Association swimming championships for the third consecutive year yesterday at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Complex at Central O’ahu Regional Park.

It was the ninth OIA title for the Trojan boys and 10th overall for the girls. The three-peat was especially satisfying for the boys, who held off Kaiser with a first-place finish in the final event —the 400-yard freestyle relay — to win top honors.

“It was really gratifying for the boys because their leadership — led by Kent Yamada — really wanted it and they knew they were behind,” Mililani coach Sharon Lopez said.

The Trojans trailed the Cougars, the Eastern Division champions, heading into the 400 freestyle relay.

“They had to take first to get enough points to jump Kaiser,” Lopez said.

“It was a matter of every one of us holding our side of the deal,” said Yamada, who swam the third leg. “I really wanted to win (OIAs) again because our coach put so much effort into it. I’m pretty proud of our team.”
