Kahuku, Hawai’i, February 20, 2008 – Danica Leilani Auna,
captain of the Kahuku girls wrestling team, is seeking to become the first OIA
female wrestler to win four individual titles in four different weight classes.  Already an OIA champion at 103lbs, 108lbs and
125lbs, she will be seeking her fourth title at 120lbs this Friday and Saturday
at Leilehua High School.

Her wrestling career began in
7th grade on the Kahuku Intermediate team.   She made the varsity squad as a freshman in
2005 and quickly made her mark winning the OIA East and OIA championships at
103lbs.  She went on to finish second in
the State championships losing in overtime, 4-2, to Carla Watase of Iolani.  In 2006, she won the OIA East and OIA
championships at 108lbs and finished second again in the state final losing,
4-3, to Megan Morisada of Iolani.  After
winning yet another OIA championship at 125lbs last year, she finally claimed a
state title by pinning Ariella Ing of Moanalua in the 2007 final.

Her team is seeking it’s
third OIA team championship in four years and hopes to be the first school to
win four state team titles later this month.
Kahuku has been dominant this season winning the OIA dual championships
and OIA East championship by wide margins.
They currently have three All-Americans that are nationally ranked.  Ciannah Hee is ranked second in the 120lb.,
Danica is ranked 3rd at 124lbs., and Amanda Soliai is ranked 3rd
at 155lbs.

Kamehameha-Kapalama started off strong and was able to hold on to a see-saw battle to defeat the Kahuku Red Raiders 62-57 in 1st Round action of the Hawaiian Airlines Boys D-II State Tournament.
The Warriors advance to play #2 Seed Konawaena Thursday at 6:00p at Jim Allegere Gymnasium at Radford High School.  Kahuku plays n the consolation game at 4:00p.

This was a big night for Warrior Blake Viena who came off the bench to score 15 points.  Most of which were on the receiving end of assists from point guard Brandon Dumlao.

The Warriors got off to a quick start and an early lead in the 1st quarter.  In the middle of the 2nd period, Jray Galeai nailed 3 consecutive 3-point field goals as the Red Raiders took the lead after an 11-2 run.  This lead will hold true until late in the 3rd period.

In the 2nd half, Galeai suffered an ankle injury early in the 3rd quarter which proved to be crucial for Kahuku.  Toward the end of the 3rd, Chaz Bajet knocked down a trey from the right wing that sporked the Warrior offense that had been dormant since the 2nd period.

Kamehameha would regain the lead and hold on for the victory.

Galeai led the Red Raiders with 11 points before the injury.

IN OTHER ACTION:

Punahou d. Lahainaluna,  65 – 32

The Buff N Blu came out fast and stayed ahead throughout the game in their defeat of the Lunas from the MIL.  Punahou will play Thursday against #3 Seed Mililani of the OIA at Jim Allegre Gymnasium on the Radford High School Campus.  That game is scheduled for 8:00p

Lahainaluna will also play Thursday in the Consolation bracket against Kahuku at 4:00p.

CHECK BACK FOR EXCLUSIVE ON -LINE BROADACASTS OF SELECT TOURNAMENT  GAMES AND  THE GIRLS D-I CHAMPIONSHIP GAME (FEB.22), & BOYS D-II AND  D-I CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES (FEB.23).

For the first time in Hawaii State Tournament history, both divisions for the Boys and Girls will run during the same week.  The Girls State Tournament will start on Tuesday and the Boys will have their first round on Wednesday.

Originally scheduled on separate weeks, the Girls Tournament needed to be moved due to scheduling of the Stan Sheriff Center, the site for the Semi-finals and the Championship Games.  The Boys Tournament had been scheduled for the Neal Blaisdell Center several months earlier.

GIRLS STATE TOURNAMENT

Punahou enters the Girls D-I Tournament with the top seed and an 11-1 record.  Coach Mike Taylor has both Shawna-Lei and Shaena-Lyn Kuehu healthy.  Their one loss came against ILH rival Iolani, which may be their edge should they meet in the title game.  Although Lady Raiders must hope that leading scorer Jamie Smith is healthy after sustaining an injury at the end of the regular season.

Kalani made it clear in the OIA playoffs that they have the ingredients to make a run for a State Championship.  Iwalani  Rodrigues may be the missing piece after transferring from Roosevelt.  Her all-around skills will be needed to handle pressure.

Do not count out the Big Island representatives.  BIIF champion Waiakea has the #2 seed in a league that has proven talent.  Defending State Champion Konawaena may not have the singular talent as in previous years.  But coach Bobbi Awa knows how to get her players up for States.

In Division II, Mckinley has the top seed after dominating OIA play with a 15-1 record.  First year head coach Abel Werner has his girls motivated and thinking about bringing home a banner.

But #2 seed Kamehameha-Hawaii may have the most talent in the tough BIIF.  Maryknoll from the ILH is the only undefeated team at 10-0.  This Tournament may be too wide open to predict.

BOYS STATE TOURNAMENT

Iolani has a familiar post as the #1 Seed and ILH Champion.  After not making it to the Championship Game last year, they are most hungry to return to their dynasty-like dominance at the beginning of the decade of consecutive State Titles.

The Konawaena boys are looking to bring home the banner as their female counter-parts did last year.  They may be the sleeper with a 14-1 record in arguably the 2nd toughest league in the State.

If there is a team riding the emotional wave, that team is OIA Champion Mililani.  They won the title for their fallen point guard Curtis Murakami who tore his Achilles tendon and will not play in the Tournament.  But that loss will be, pardon the pun, the “Achilles heel” for the Trojans who will face back court pressure by skilled guards for the opposition.

There is still Kalaheo who was favored to win the OIA, and Punahou who held the #1 Ranking for several weeks before faltering toward the end of the season.

It should be exciting.

The D-II Tournament has 3 undefeated teams, #1 seed Aiea, University, and Kauai.  The Na Ali’I are very athletic and can run the floor.  It may be a matter of whether any other team can keep up with them.

Mckinley caught some momentum at the best time, toward the end of the season.  They lok to defend their title.  University has some size which plays a bigger role in the D-II level.  The Red Raiders from Kauai have that chip on their shoulder to prove that their record is no fluke.

A chip is also on the shoulders of Molokai as they represent the MIL.  Kohala will have the experience of playing  in the State Championship game last year.  When you are that close,  you definitely want to finish the deal the next time.

THE DIGITAL SPORTS HAWAII SOCCER TEAM

David Kawada – Content Editor
dkawada@digitalsports.com

Kamehameha Schools accomplished the “Double dip” by claiming the Boys and Girls Division I State Championships this year.   Mid Pacific and Kamehameha-Hawaii respectively brought the Division II Titles back to their campuses.

Being new to the sport, I learned some interesting notes about this 2007-08 season:

1.  Sacred Hearts Girls entered varsity competition for the first time and qualified for the State Tournament.
2.  Kapa’a Boys made it to the D-II State Championship Game for the first time in school history.
3.  Honoka’a Boys earned a top seed in the State Tournament for the first time in school history
4.  The clock does not stop.  No timeouts.
5.  The Shootout is one of the most exciting and anxious moments in sports.

We want to thank all those that contributed to nominating players for this Top 25 Team, renamed the DIGITAL SPORTS HAWAII SOCCER TEAM.  Congratulations to all the players and teams that competed this year!
