Kahuku sacks Punahou
Honolulu Star Bulletin
By Paul Honda

Second-ranked Kahuku registered seven sacks against a rebuilding Punahou squad in a 24-14 win last night at Aloha Stadium.

T.J. Tito, a junior linebacker, recorded three of those sacks on first-year starter Kaiana Eldredge, a transfer from Utah. Kahuku improved to 2-0 in nonconference play, while defending state champion Punahou lost its season opener.

“The D-line opened up holes for me,” said Tito, sounding more line a running back. “They took out all the (offensive) tackles.”

Interior defensive linemen Veteson Sauni, Kona Schwenke and Hauoli Jamora drew their share of attention from Punahou’s experienced O-line.

“The defense played well,” coach Reggie Torres said. “Our three front guys are studs.”

Though the Red Raiders continue to unveil new looks — pistol and spread formations with four receivers — the philosophy hasn’t strayed far from its roots. Kahuku ran the ball on 39 of 52 plays from scrimmage.

Punahou’s defense was stingy on the ground, but Kahuku quarterback Evan Moe found the passing lanes to his liking. He completed only four passes, but didn’t force many others and hit two receivers for touchdowns.

Kahuku topples Punahou, 24-14

Honolulu Advertiser
By Stacy Kaneshiro

Playing like a team with more experience, Kahuku came out firing on all cylinders to beat defending Division I state champion Punahou, 24-14, last night at Aloha Stadium.

The nonleague game was the season opener for the Buffanblu (0-1), who are looking for a successor to all-state quarterback Cayman Shutter.

Meanwhile, the Red Raiders (2-0) looked like a team ready for its O’ahu Interscholastic Association Red East opener Saturday at Kailua.

Kahuku’s defense set the tone, limiting the Buffanblu to just 91 yards in offense. Punahou’s only TD by the offense came on a fumble recovery in the end zone by Dean Matsuo with 53 seconds left in the game. Their other score was an 81-yard interception return by Jeremy Ioane.

Outside linebacker T.J. Tito was in on five of Kahuku’s seven sacks on Punahou QBs Kaiana Eldredge and Liloa Travis, who is in his first season. Eldredge is a transfer from a Utah program that primarily ran the ball.

Morris leads Red Raiders

KANE’OHE — Kahuku debuted its new pass-first offense last night, but it was senior Lopaka Morris who stole the show in a 49-14 non-league football win over Kealakehe at Castle.

Morris caught a touchdown pass, ran in a score and added two more TDs on kickoff returns to lift the Red Raiders (1-0) past the Waveriders (0-1) in the season opener for both teams.

“This felt good, we’ve been preparing for this the whole summer,” said Morris, who played cornerback, wide receiver, running back and kick returner.

“He’s such a great athlete, we just have to work on giving him the ball more,” Red Raiders’ coach Reggie Torres said. “I don’t think we got him the ball enough, that’s one thing that we need to work on as a staff — to get him the ball — because you see what he can do with it.”

On the Red Raiders’ first play from scrimmage, Tyrone Brown took a handoff from quarterback Sage Kaka and plunged four yards for a score. The play was set-up by an errant Kealakehe shotgun snap, that was recovered by Kahuku’s Dallin Muti.
