Tonight
would prove to be a stunning night in OIA Playoff history.  Both
of the top seeds from the East and the West were upset on their home
fields and subsequently ending their seasons much earlier than anyone
expected.  Waianae managed to escape and keep their State playoff
hopes alive.

Kapolei Upsets Kahuku 14-7

The
tumultuous 2007 football season comes to a screeching halt for the Red
Raider football team.  The defending state champions suffer their
first home loss in almost a decade at the hands of Kapolei 14-7.

A
small minority of parents created a dissident movement to get head
coach Reggie Torres removed from his position earlier this month.
E-mails and threats circulated the North Shore leading to meetings with
school and DOE officials, and a forced boycott of one practice by half
of the players.  The distractions finally took its toll.

The Kapolei defense came to play, holding the vaunted Kahuku running attack at bay.

“This is the biggest victory in our short history!” said Kapolei Coach Darren Hernandez.

Kapolei advances to play Waianae next Saturday in the Semi-Finals at aloha Stadium.

Leilehua Defeats Mililani in OT

Not to be outdone, the Leilehua Mules upset the West #1 Seed Mililani 27-21 in overtime at Mililani high School.

These
neighboring rivals battled to a 21-21 tie at the end of
regulation.  The Trojans got first possession in overtime and
scored on a Colin Lund filed goal.  But a roughing the kicker
penalty was accepted by Head Coach Darnell Arceneaux and the Trojans
erased the points to get the possession and the opportunity to score a
touchdown.  Leilehua was able to stop them on 4th and goal.

The Mules then took their turn. Running back Bronson Pausa would score from 2 yards out to give the Mules the victory.

Leilehua
will play either Farrington or Campbell which plays tomorrow night at
Roosevelt Stadium.  That semi-final game will be next Saturday at
Aloha Stadium.  Mililani ends their season.

Waianae Survives

Out
on the Leeward Coast, Waianae prevented a 3rd upset by defeating
Kalaheo 12-6 in a defensive battle.  The Seariders will play
Kapolei in next Saturday??s semi final game at 4:00p at Aloha Stadium.

Kalaheo, the surprise team in the OIA this year, ends their season after a gallant effort on Waianae??s home field.

Red Championship: Moanalua d. Kahuku 2-0

The
Moanalua Girls Volleyball Team has been here before.  Here being
the OIA Red Championship game.  As a perennial power, the Menehune
have always been around at the end.  But they had never gone over
the hump to actually win the title.

The monkey is off the back tonight.

The
Menehune took care of business and defeated the #1 East Seed Kahuku in
2 games, 27-25, 25-15, and claimed the OIA Red Championship.  The
match took place at Mckinley??s Student Council Gymnasium in front of a
raucous crowd.

The first game seemed to be indicative of the level of play from both teams.
Outside
hitter Kaleinani Kabalis completely dominated her competition and
played one of her best all-around matches of the season.  She put
down 20 kills, hit .447, and also had a game high 17 digs, to help lead
her team to the upset victory.

Kaylee Ponce also contributed 5 kills, including game and match point.

??I
give the credit to our players,? said Moanalua Head Coach Tommy
Lake.  ??They really regrouped themselves after we had a couple of
losses in the season and they??ve really played well since the
tournament started.?

Kahuku went back and forth with the lead in
game 1.  They reached game point first but could not put it
away.  In Game 2 the Lady Red Raiders had difficulty handling the
Menehune serves right from the beginning.  They could not get into
an offensive flow and Moanalua took full advantage of it.

Leilani
Tafuna led the team with 8 kills.  Defensively Alayna Galeai had 4
blocks and libero Nina Blake was all over the floor with 10 digs.

White Championship: Farrington d. Mckinley 2-0

Mckinley
has been a dominant force in the White Division, earning the East #1
seed.  Right behind them in the East was Farrington.  As they
say, when it comes to the playoffs, it is a whole new ballgame.

The
Lady Governors brought their ??A? game when it counted, defeating
Mckinley 25-21, 25-21, to win the OIA White Division
Championship.  They should get one of the top seeds in the HHSAA
Division II State Tournament starting next week.

Coach Reagan
Agena??s crew put together a team effort with 4 players getting 5?
kills.  Part of the effort came from Brandy and Brandy.
Outside hitter Brandy Kahanaoi-Pimental registered 6 kills along with
Taiana Faafiti-Samuseva.  Setter Brandy Vergado-Duclayan
distributed the ball well to keep the Tiger defense guessing.  She
also contributed 5 kills, along with middle blocker Keui Remigio.

??I
just told them to stay focused, relax, and play your game,? said
Agena.  ??Last time we played them I think our girls were too
tense.?

For the Lady Tigers, Juri Franzen and Pearly Togiai had
5 kills each.  Letiera Iafeta and Naleo Luis-Mateo played well in
the back row, each with 8 digs.

Kahuku Battles Moanalua For OIA Volleyball Title

Kahuku, Moanalua, For OIA Volleyball Title

David Kawada – Digital Sports Hawaii Content Editor

October 24, 2007

There will be a new OIA Girls Volleyball Champion crowned Thursday night at Mckinley High School Gymnasium.

Defending champion Roosevelt was upset Tuesday by Moanalua, 25-23, 25-16.  Head Coach Tommy Lake saw one of his key players, Kaleinani Kabalis, play one of her better all-around matches of the season.  She had 17 kills to go with good passes and sets.  If she plays equally as well in the championship match, the Kahuku defense will have their work cut out for them.  The Na Menehune defense also executed their game plan in the semi-finals. They held Roosevelt’s top hitter, Mele Yamashiro to only 8 kills.

But East #1 Seed Kahuku has more than one offensive weapon.  Coach Uila Fotu Vendiola has played as much as 18 players.  Partly because they were beating their opponents handily.  But also because she has that kind of depth.  Attacks could come from Leilani Tafuna one night, or Alyssa Wily the next.   Shanlie Kaulula’au had 5 kills in game 1 of their semi-final win over Mililani on Tuesday.

The Moanalua team took some consecutive losses toward the latter part of the season when Kabalis was not able to play.  Similarly, Kahuku got their only 2 losses at the end of the season coincidentally when all the intensity surrounding the football team were at its apex.  The Lady Red Raiders even had to battle to 3 games to defeat Kapolei in the quarterfinals.

Both teams are playing their best volleyball now.  Both coaches would agree that now is the best time to hit your peak.

Red Championship Game is set for 7:30p.  The White Championship Game between Mckinley and Farrington will precede the Red match at 6:00p.

Roosevelt Gives Kahuku First Defeat

Roosevelt Gives Kahuku First Defeat

Going undefeated in any team sport is a remarkable
feat.  At 9-0, the Kahuku Girls Volleyball Team seemed to be on the
verge of such an accomplishment.  They would host their nearest rival,
Roosevelt, whom they beat earlier in the season, with only 2 more games
after tonight.

Apparently Roosevelt did not receive the memo.  The Lady
Roughriders dispatched the Red Raiders in 2 games, 25-23 and 25-17, in
Kahuku.  Roosevelt improves to 9-2, while Kahuku is at 9-1.

The defending OIA champion Roughriders lost to Kahuku 2 -1 earlier in the season, after winning the first game.

Kahuku will not lose, said 10-year Roosevelt head
coach Bryan Camello. Our girls thought that they would just roll over
after game 1.  But they’re tough.  They came back at us. We need to be
prepared.

Leinaala Batalona

Game 1 tonight showed how equal these 2 teams are.  Roosevelt led by as much as 19-14 after a quick attack by middle blocker Jacey Tagavilla.  But Kahuku rallied with 2 aces by Lavinia Latu, good side outs, then a **** by Nile Teo, to narrow the lead to 19-18.

The Lady Red Raiders would tie Roosevelt at 21-21 after a tough serve by Leilani Tafuna caused a Rough Rider overpass.  The tie would turn into a 2-point lead for Kahuku at 23-21.

But that would be all the scoring for the Red Raiders.

After a Kahuku service error, Emily Maeda served an ace to tie the game again at 23-23.  Meleana Yamashiro, who struggled a bit in this game with only 2 kills and 2 hitting errors, came through with a **** to take the lead for good.  A Red Raider hitting error ended game 1.

Game 2 would not be so close.

After being tied at 7 all in game 2, the Lady
Roughriders decided to make their move.  Setter Darcie Anderson moved
her sets around with middle attacks from Casey Issenmann and Tagavilla
as well as the outside with Yamashiro and Maeda. Each would finish with
7 kills each.

Final score was 25-17 in favor of Roosevelt to complete the sweep.

**** leader for Kahuku was Leilani Tafuna with 5 kills, followed by Alayna Galeai and Nile Teo.

Our team had no intensity tonight, said Kahuku coach Uila Fotu Vendiola.  This is a good wake up call.

Both Kahuku and Roosevelt are vying for the top 2 seeds in the OIA
Playoffs which receive the first round byes.   The top 6 from the West
and East make the post season.

Shanlie Kaulula’au goes through block of Emily Maeda and Casey Issenmann
