Athletic Program updates
New Coaches:
Craig Knohl: Cross Country
Kawai Chee: Competition & Sideline Cheer Team
Kaniela Kalama: Girls Volleyball
David Te’o: Girls Basketball
Athletic Passes:
A $20.00 Kahuku Athletic Pass buys you free entry into all regular season football games (6), all girls and boys volleyball and basketball regular season games (48) and a $3.00 discount to all OIA playoff games in these sports. The passes will be sold during registration on July 22nd and July 26th. Grade K-12 students may purchase passes. With every purchase, the student will receive a free athletic t-shirt or cap. All proceeds from the Kahuku Athletic Pass sales will remain at KHIS to help fund our Athletic Program.
Before a student can participate in a sports, a Physical Form and an Assumption of Risk Form must be completed and returned to the coach. Forms may be picked up from the front office, the coach or from the Athletic Director. Additionally, all obligations mus be cleared with the business office prior to a student participating in a sport.
Kahuku Athletics Carners 3rd Kaimana Award in Five Years:
Kahuku High and Intermediate’s Athletic Program won its 3rd Kaimana Award in five years. This prestigious award sponsored by HMSA, recognizes and rewards high schools for outstanding achievement. Introduced in the 2005-2006 school year, it acknowledges high schools and their studnets for success on and off the field in athletics, academics, sportsmantship and community service. Mililani High and Kalani High were also recognized as this years’ winners in the OIA.
Participation: Points are earned according to the participation of the total student body that participates in a team sport recognized by their league. KHIS had 749 students (74% of total high school population) participate in athletics for SY 2009-2010.
League Championships: Points are awarded for each varsity-level league championship a school wins. All sports are treated equally. A tennis championship will carry the same weight as a football championship. This accounts for any gender inequities. KHIS won three league championships: football, girls volleyball and girls water polo.
Sportsmanship: Schools automatically start with 100 points. Points are deducted when a reported incident occurs that reflects poorly on sportsmanship i.e. Coach’s ejection from a game for unsportsmanlike conduct. This applies to all members of the coaching staff or any physical damages exceeding $250 caused by a team member to the venue (50 points). Any physical altercation with an official, player or fan or other spectator at the league event. Any incident where a player is ejected from a game for unsportsmanlike conduct (25 points). KHIS had one incident and finished with 75 points.
Community Service: Each school receives points for community service performed by their entire student body. The size of the student enrollment determines the minimum amount of service hours to receive the 100 point maximum. KHIS needed 7500 hours to receive 100 points and we accumulated a total of 8100 hours of service.
Academics: Points are earned based on the collective grade point average of all students athletes participating in league recognized team sports. Points are awarded based on students athletes who have earned a 2.75 GPA or higher. Seventy-five percent of KHIS athletes attained a 2.75 GPA or higher.
Kahuku High & Intermediate School Results by Year:
Laie, HI—Brigham Young University Hawaii hired former Kahuku High School
Coach Hiram Akina to lead the Seasiders’ women’s basketball team today.
Akina replaces Wendy Anae, who coached the team for the first four years of its
existence and is leaving to further her education.
Akina, who graduated from BYU–Hawaii in 1983 and obtained his masters from
BYU in 1986, inherits a squad that went 9-17 overall last season and was 5-11
in the Pacific West Conference. He brings a wealth of experience to the
job, having coached the Kahuku boy’s team to a 46-13 mark over the last two
seasons after head coaching jobs at Mililani High School (boys),
Chandler-Gilbert Community College (women), Arizona Boys Ranch, Hopi High
School (girls), Las Vegas High School (boys), and Brinley Middle School (boys)
along with stints as an assistant coach at Valley High School (boys),
BYU–Hawaii (men), and BYU (women) in a career that spans 26 years.
BYU–Hawaii Athletic Director Ken Wagner says he is “excited to have someone
of Coach Akina’s experience and local knowledge take over our program. We
expect him to run a great program here.”
Coach Akina shares Wagner’s excitement. “I have a vision of what this program
can become,” he says. “I can’t wait to get started and I expect to win a
lot of games here.”
BYU–Hawaii added women’s basketball as a varsity sport to
start the 2006-07 season and owns a record of 43-62 in the four years of the
program, all under Coach Anae.
