Kalani Falcons 64 – Kahuku 37

As I watched the Kalani vs Kahuku contest in girls
basketball, I couldn’t help thinking of the Iolani vs
Kahuku water polo championship game just played this
past weekend. Kalani was smaller than Kahuku, but
quicker, just like Iolani was in water polo. Very much
quicker. Even though Kahuku won the rebounding battle by
a large margin, 41-26, Kalani’s passes were sharp and
their running always seemed to put them a half-step
ahead of their more powerful foes. In the end, speed
triumphed as Kalani ran away with a 64-37 victory to
move on to the next round where number 2 seeded
Konawaena awaits them.

Kalani had 3
scorers in double figures,  Courtney Gaddis (14),
Chloe Martin (12), Kacie Gushiken (10). Kahuku was led
by Teeja Afalava with 10 points.

Honoka’a 33 – Moanalua 25

Led by
strong overall play  and 12 rebounds from
Keisha Kanekoa, Honokaa put the brakes on Moanalua’s
shooting with a somewhat close 33-25 victory. This
was a defensive battle as both teams had trouble
putting it in the hole. Only one player made it to
double figures, and that was Jamie-Leigh Ronolo of
Moanalua who had 13.

Honokaa
earns the right to take on #1 seed Roosevelt at 4pm
in the quarterfinals Wednesday. Moanalua takes on
Farrington at 12:30. Both games are at Stan Sheriff
Center.

Punahou 62 – Farrington
37

Farrington is a
big, scrappy team. But, they were no match for the Buff
N Blue last night at Stan Sheriff Center. After watching
Punahou all season, it is pretty obvious that they are
playing their best ball right now. Beating Kamehameha to
win the ILH tournament was a huge accomplishment, and
yesterday was more of the same. They are running very
well and playing very smart. To all other teams, beware!
This team may not be seeded, but they are very
dangerous.

Punahou only
had one player in double figures, Tressa Torres with 14
points, as they received a complete team effort. My
unofficial player of the game goes to Chelsea Deptula
who had 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals. Melanie
Feldman also had a strong game as floor leader with 8
points. Final score was 62-37.

Punahou plays
#4 seed Lahainaluna at 2:15 this afternoon. Should be a
great game!
