#1 Prep Preview: Kahuku no longer run-dimensional

Kahuku no longer run-dimensional

By Billy Hull

Honolulu Star-Advertiser

Every year, count on Kahuku to produce its share of Division I-level prospects.

Defensive
linemen Kona Schwenke (Notre Dame) and Hauoli Jamora (Washington) led
the way last season. Hawaii sophomores Aulola Tonga and Paipai Falemalu
were focal points of Kahuku’s defense in 2008. Defensive end Nai Fotu
(Utah), linebacker B.J. Beatty (Colorado) and defensive backs Suaesi
Tuimaunei (Oregon State) and Richard Torres (Hawaii) are all making
impacts on their respective teams.

Notice a connection? All of them are on the defensive side of the ball.

It’s no secret Kahuku’s bread and butter is a stingy defense and a punishing rushing attack.

This season might finally be the year Kahuku breaks out in the one area it has been most vulnerable.

Senior
quarterback Evan Moe and receivers Punga Vea and Shairone Thompson are
the men behind a passing game that could separate this year’s squad from
those before it.

The two receivers combined for 222 receiving yards in a 27-7 win over Waianae on Saturday to start the season.

Kahuku storms past Waianae

By Billy Hull

Honolulu Star-Advertiser.com

Based on its performance, it’s hard to imagine this was Kahuku’s season-opening football game.

The Red Raiders mixed big plays on offense with a
lock-down defense that held Waianae to 122 total yards in a 27-7 win
last night in an interleague game at Carleton Weimer Field.

Punga Vea had four catches for 166 yards and two
touchdowns and quarterbacks Evan Moe
and Viliami Livai combined for 261
passing yards as Kahuku showed it’ll be just as tough throwing the ball
as it always is running it.

“(Our quarterbacks) have really come along and are good at putting (the ball) in the right spots,” Vea said.

Kahuku was its normal self on the ground, piling
up 194 yards with a multitude of running backs who showed flashes of
brilliance at times.

Aofaga Wily, who got the bulk of the starting
reps, led the way with 69 yards on 11 carries. Tyrone Brown needed just
five touches to rack up 67 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown run in
the first quarter for Kahuku’s first touchdown of the season.

“We’ve been working on things all summer and I’m
happy where we were from our last scrimmage to now,” Kahuku coach Reggie
Torres said. “A lot of it has to do with the fact we had great
scrimmages and those scrimmages prepared us for this.”

Moe, who finished 6-for-10 for 178 yards, burned
the Waianae defense in the second quarter twice for long touchdowns.
Vea’s first scoring catch came on a 67-yard post pattern.
Then, with a
minute left, Moe hooked up with 6-foot-5 receiver Shairone Thompson on a
40-yard score to give Kahuku a 20-0 lead.

Kahuku’s only mistakes on defense came in the last second of the first.

Waianae’s multi-dimensional quarterback Puletua
Wilson, held to only 19 yards running and 42 yards passing, found
Hookena Kamaka for a 38-yard pass to get the ball inside the Kahuku 20
for the only time all night.

Kahuku almost got to Wilson for a sack to end the
half, but he scrambled out of bounds to give Waianae, which had no
timeouts, another look. The Seariders made it count as Wilson went
play-action and hit Bryson Panui out of the backfield for an 11-yard
score to make it 20-7 at the half.

“We needed something positive,” Waianae coach
Daniel Matsumoto said. “Kahuku came at us quick. Give credit to Kahuku,
they did solid both on the ground and in the air. (They’re) a real
balanced team.”

Moe put the game out of reach with his third touchdown pass, hitting Vea on the same post route for a 33-yard score.

Up 27-7, Kahuku turned to Livai, a 6-foot
sophomore making his varsity debut. After a shaky first throw, Livai hit
two straight passes, including a perfectly thrown ball to Vea for 56
yards.

Kahuku’s 455 total yards nearly tripled Waianae’s total.

Football Prep Preview Receivers: Double Threat

By Brian McInnis

Honolulu Star-Advertiser
Aug 12, 2010

The friendly competitions between Punga Vea and Shairone Thompson started years ago.

As young children in the same preschool class, the future Kahuku receivers instinctively saw each other as rivals.

“I
always remember me and him would try to outdo each other,” Thompson
said. “Whether it was Halloween dressing up, or competing on the
playground.”

Not
much has changed these days. The two Red Raiders seniors are still
playing their own version of “Can You Top This?” And they’re better off
for it.

“I get one good catch, Punga always has to outdo it,” Thompson said with a head shake. “And we just kind of go off from there.”

Though
the run is still unquestionably the bread and butter of the Kahuku
offense, opponents have learned the Raiders can feast through the air,
too. It’s what helped get the perennial North Shore power back to the
state final last year, where it lost 34-21 to Kamehameha.

Kahuku and Waianae will tee it up Saturday

By Paul Honda

Honolulu Star-Advertiser
August 15th, 2010

Two games are off the board this weekend, a third
that was believed to be canceled is alive and well, and a new matchup
has crystallized out of thin air.

The new game pits Waianae against Kahuku in an
old-school matchup of public school titans. The game, set for 6 p.m. on
Saturday at Kahuku, fills a void for each team. Waianae had a gap after
Nanakuli canceled its scheduled game. Kahuku’s trip to the mainland — a
game with Bingham (Utah) — was shelved some time back.

“We both were out a game. This is a good thing for both of us,” Kahuku athletic director Joe Whitford said.

Meanwhile, Waiakea will play Maui this weekend
despite academic issues for the Sabers. Maui has beefed up its varsity
squad by adding junior varsity players.

Prep Preview Defensive Backs: One-man Cy-clone

By Paul Honda

Honolulu Star-Advertiser
Aug 10, 2010

In an era of specialization, Cyrus Coen defies generalities.

There are hundreds of football players in public schools in Hawaii, but how many of them have done as much as Coen?

The Pearl City senior has a 3.8 grade-point
average and a 1,630 SAT score and actually enjoys physics and English
classes. So much for the disruption of basic spelling due to modern
texting. In fact, Coen goes one step further, disassembling any notion
that local kids don’t like speaking in public. It’s the “speak out”
portion of Mr. (Ed) Duggan’s English class he enjoys most.

All of that would be nice enough for any student,
but Coen also has a penchant for defending turf. The 6-foot, 205-pound
safety is one of the best in the state, even as the Chargers wallow in
Division II of the Oahu Interscholastic Association.

Thursday’s scrimmage against perennial power Waianae was the clearest
evidence that Coen and his teammates have overcome a lack of numbers (36
suited up) and size. They kept pace with the visiting Seariders by
sheer technique — staying low and wrapping up Waianae’s ball carriers
most of the night — and willpower.

Stepping in at middle linebacker due to academic
casualties, Coen roamed sideline to sideline making tackles along with
state champion wrestler and linebacker Ray Cooper, his best friend.

Coen also stepped up offensively, taking a pitch
on a speed option 90 yards for the Chargers’ lone touchdown. He cut back
from the right sideline to the left, leaving Waianae’s rugged defense
in his tracks on a third-and-20 play.
