Roosevelt sinks Kahuku for title

By Kalani Takase

WAIPI’O — A week after winning its biggest game in school history, the Roosevelt girls water polo team did it again yesterday — this time for its first O’ahu Interscholastic Association title.

Bori Stoycheva and Patrice Dang scored two goals apiece to lead the Rough Riders (14-0) to a 7-5 win over six-time defending league champion Kahuku (12-2) before a crowd of 150 at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center at Patsy T. Mink Central O’ahu Regional Park.

Roosevelt, which handed the Red Raiders their lone loss in the program’s seven-year history last week, became the first school besides Kahuku to win an OIA championship. Kahuku had defeated Roosevelt in each of the previous six OIA title games.

“We feel elated, we even have alumni here celebrating with us,” Roosevelt coach Susan Nishioka said. “Our players have worked really hard for the whole season. This feels really good.”

After each team scored in the first quarter, the Rough Riders jumped ahead with three goals in the second while holding Kahuku scoreless.
