It was only the first game of
the season. But St Louis versus Kahuku definitely has a
magnetic ring to it. Thank goodness for
Inter-League play as high school football fans got to see the top 2 high school
football programs square off at Aloha Stadium to start the 2007 season. St
Louis defeated Kahuku 21-6.
Fans may have read into the
matchup as a rematch of last year??s State Championship game. Maybe even the players did as well. But both coaches saw the game for what it was
?? the first game of the season. The new
players, the mistakes. The execution. The new uniforms. And probably a few more mistakes.
Second year Crusader QB Micah
Mamiya showed he was fully healed from his collarbone injury on their first
offensive drive, hitting Lucas Gonsalves for a 65 yard TD strike.
But the Red Raiders responded
in the 2nd quarter as new junior QB Jray Galeai, a transfer from Timpview, UT,
showed that he can run the option and throw a nice spiral. Galeai connected with RB Junior Mataafa for a
16 yard score. The kick failed.
The Crusaders then shut the
door with 2 unanswered touchdowns. One a
3 yard run by Vonn Feao. The other by
the defense as LB Joseph Lacoden recovered a fumble and returned it 41 yards
for a touchdown.
??Sloppy. We were pretty sloppy,? said St Louis coach Delbert Tengan. Coach Reggie Torres would probably say the
same things. Both teams suffered through
off-sides penalties, turnovers, and delay-of-games penalties.
The best part is that both
teams will only get better. We may even
see them play each other again in late November ?? during the HHSAA playoffs.
